What to Pack for Dog Boarding: A Complete Checklist
Getting ready for a trip is easier when you know your dog has everything they need for a comfortable stay. Whether this is your dog’s first overnight boarding experience or they already know the routine, a little preparation can make drop-off easier for everyone.
If you’re wondering what to pack for dog boarding, use this checklist to make sure the essentials are covered before you leave home.
1. Your Dog’s Regular Food
One of the most important things to pack is the food your dog normally eats at home.
Travel and a new environment already introduce changes to your dog’s routine. Keeping their normal diet consistent can help reduce the chance of an upset stomach during their stay.
Bring enough food for the entire reservation, plus a little extra in case your plans unexpectedly change.
If your dog has special feeding instructions, make them clear when you drop them off. This is particularly important for dogs with food sensitivities, allergies, or prescription diets.
At One Lucky Pup, we recommend bringing your dog’s regular food from home for boarding.
2. Medications and Clear Instructions
If your dog takes medication, make sure the boarding staff knows exactly what they need and when they need it.
Bring medications in their original packaging and include clear administration instructions.
Before drop-off, double-check that you have packed enough medication for the full stay. It can also be helpful to provide information about anything the staff should watch for while your dog is taking it.
One Lucky Pup can administer prescribed medications during your dog’s boarding stay.
3. Vaccination Information
Don’t wait until the day of your reservation to find out whether your dog’s vaccinations are current.
Boarding and daycare facilities have vaccination requirements to help protect dogs sharing the same environment.
For dogs participating in daycare and boarding at One Lucky Pup, required vaccinations include:
- Rabies
- Distemper/parvo
- Bordetella
The canine influenza vaccine is recommended but is not currently required.
Check your dog’s veterinary records well before an upcoming trip so you have time to address anything that needs updating.
4. Familiar Bedding, If Appropriate
Some dogs enjoy having something familiar from home while they are away.
Depending on the boarding accommodations, you may be able to bring your dog’s bedding or another comfortable item from home.
One Lucky Pup provides a comfortable place for dogs to rest, and owners may also bring bedding from home if they would like.
Choose something practical and washable. Even a dog who never has accidents at home may get a little messy while staying somewhere new.
And don’t send an irreplaceable favorite blanket. Dogs sometimes treat their belongings a little differently when they’re away from home.
5. A Safe Toy or Chew
A familiar toy can give your dog something to enjoy during downtime.
Keep it simple. A soft toy or appropriate hard chew may be a good option if your dog reliably uses those items safely.
Avoid sending anything that could become a choking or ingestion hazard. One Lucky Pup specifically asks owners not to bring rawhide for overnight boarding because dogs cannot be continuously supervised while chewing it overnight.
If you’re unsure whether a particular item is appropriate, ask before packing it.
6. Important Care Information
The boarding team should know about anything that could affect your dog’s stay.
That can include:
- Feeding habits
- Medications
- Allergies or sensitivities
- Physical limitations
- Behavioral concerns
- Handling preferences
- Recent health changes
Don’t assume that a small detail isn’t worth mentioning.
For example, knowing that a dog is uncomfortable having a particular part of their body handled or becomes nervous in a specific situation can help staff understand the dog better.
The goal isn’t to write your dog’s biography. Just communicate information that could meaningfully affect their health, safety, comfort, or care.
7. Emergency Contact Information
Make sure your contact information is current before leaving your dog.
If you’ll be difficult to reach while traveling, consider providing an additional trusted contact who can make decisions if necessary.
It’s also a good idea to make sure your dog’s veterinary information is current.
Hopefully none of it will be needed, but having accurate information available is an important part of preparing for any boarding stay.
What Should You Leave at Home?
Packing more isn’t necessarily better.
Unless your boarding facility specifically requests something, you generally don’t need to bring your dog’s entire collection of toys, bowls, oversized beds, or other belongings.
Too many possessions are harder to keep organized and create more opportunities for something to become dirty, damaged, or misplaced.
For a typical stay, focus on the essentials:
- Regular food
- Necessary medications
- Required health information
- Appropriate bedding, if desired
- One or two approved comfort items
And remember to leave unsafe chews such as rawhide at home.
How Can You Prepare Your Dog Before Boarding?
What you do before boarding can matter just as much as what you pack.
Try to keep your dog’s normal routine relatively consistent leading up to the stay. Sudden changes in food or schedule immediately before boarding usually aren’t helpful.
If your dog will be participating in group play, it’s also important to choose a facility that evaluates whether dogs are comfortable in that environment.
At One Lucky Pup, dogs participating in daycare and boarding must meet our health and behavioral requirements and be comfortable with our staff and in a playgroup with other dogs.
Our overnight boarding also includes daycare activities, giving eligible dogs opportunities for activity and socialization during their stay.
First Time Boarding? Plan Ahead
If this will be your dog’s first boarding experience, don’t leave preparation until the night before your trip.
Confirm vaccination requirements and availability early, particularly if you’re traveling during holidays or other popular vacation periods.
You should also learn how the facility structures play, rest, feeding, and overnight accommodations so you know whether the environment is appropriate for your dog.
A good boarding experience starts with finding the right fit, not simply packing the right bag.
